Default +24 armor?

I've noticed that there's a significant number of skills that give exactly +24 armor that doesn't scale with attribute investment.

These include:
[skill]Disciplined Stance[/skill][skill]Defensive Stance[/skill][skill]Conviction[/skill][skill]"Shields Up!"[/skill]

+40 armor, as I recall, should be roughly half damage, so +20 should be 1/4 less damage. On top of that, armor bonuses from skills only stack to +25. This makes +24 seem like a very random, arbitrary number. Anyway, does anyone know if 24 is somehow a "magic number" in the Guild Wars armor calculations? Why would Anet have chosen it over and over again for skills from Prophecies all the way to Eye of the North?

The only thing I can think of is shields cause they have an ar of 16.

This should help with the numbers: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Armor_rating

+24 is 1/3rd damage. So 100 damage will deal 66.

+24 seems like it was chosen for a reason to me too but i didnt want to be the first to ask although i never really thought that it could have been a lucky number or something along those lines i suppose we will never know unless someone shoots a message to support or something.

+40 AL multiplies by 1/2
+24 AL multiplies by 2/3

150 damage fireball on 60 AL = 150 damage
150 damage fireball on 100 AL = 75 damage
150 damage fireball on 84 AL = 100 damage

Orriginally armor stacked, so there was no reason to pick 24 other than when you combined it with a shield you get an even number.

Now that the limit is 25, 24armor does seam like a strange number to have.

he answered the question... some skills give a temporary 30% dmg reduction. what's so odd about that?

Shields don't contribute to the armor involved in the +25 max. You can have +16 from your shield, and still recieve +25 from a skill or spell. That would provide you with +41 if you had both, since the shield does not factor into the max allowed.

Only skills that grant armor bonuses are affected by the armor stacking cap.

Hmmm, I think you're right, actually. I knew before I posted that 24 armor is roughly equal to 33% damage reduction, but I didn't think it was precisely that much. The link Proff gave seems to indicate that 84 armor (60 + 24) would have a damage multiplier of about 0.66.
